When applied to paper, the water saturates the cellulose fibers, causing them to swell. As the glue dries, the paper shrinks unevenly, resulting in permanent wrinkles. While professional-grade PVA can be used for heavy watercolor papers, it must be applied in an extremely thin, uniform layer. Glue sticks have lower moisture content but can be difficult to spread smoothly over large areas, often leaving behind tiny lumps that show through thin paper.
To achieve a flawless bond, you need a few essential tools alongside your adhesive. A rubber brayer (a hand roller) is indispensable for applying firm, uniform pressure across the entire surface of the artwork.
